It’s important that we all learn to care for and promote our mental health!

What is mental health? Did you know it’s something we all have? It’s true! A person’s mental health simply means how they understand their own thoughts, feelings, actions, and interactions with others. Sometimes our mental health is positive, and other times it’s not. Learning we all have mental health reminds us that we aren’t alone. We’re so grateful you’re here!

Dr. Katie Lingras (she/her) is a child psychologist who is passionate about improving the lives of young children and their families. Like Mr. Rogers, Dr. Katie thrives on making hard topics “mentionable” for kids and grownups. Dr. Katie lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with her family, and supports her own mental health by singing, running, and adventuring around the world!

After 10+ years of practice, I have learned how critical it is that children are supported by the grown-ups in their lives as they learn about mental health. Dr. Lingras has crafted an accessible book that can foster hours of conversation between adults and children. She has taken complex topics and crafted digestible content that educates while fostering dialogue.

As a Developmental Psychologist myself, I firmly believe that it's never too early to start talking to kids about important and sensitive topics. Doing so in a developmentally appropriate way empowers children with knowledge and skills to deal with life stressors. Dr. Lingras is a master at this, and her book is a wonderful tool to start the conversation about mental health early. Her words take a sometimes taboo subject and make it accessible and safe for kids to talk about with their adults. Highly recommend!

As a pediatrician, I am always looking for good kid-centered books to talk about specific topics within mental health, but this is the first I am aware of that simply talks about “mental health” in general and what it means for kids. My own kids were engaged with the book and spurred good questions and conversation, and I liked the kid-friendly language and safe space that is created through the words. We are giving a copy to our school counselor so they can utilize it too. Thanks!
